HOW TO PRESERVE FOOD WITHOUT A GARDEN

Not everyone has access to a garden, but you still can preserve and “put up” food! I took a break from gardening when my children were little. Growing food AND preserving is A LOT of work! If the season you are in doesn’t allow you to have a garden (or if your crop fails for any reason), lean into the community around you.

Start by looking up local organic markets or food stands near you to look for seasonal produce grown nearby. There are many local growers who would very much appreciate your business!

Buying in bulk is another great option to reduce costs and stock a pantry. See if a local grain mill is near you that you can visit to buy bulk items from. Grains, rolled oats, flours, rice, and beans are great things to have on hand because they store well and can be used in a variety of ways. I store these items in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers and they last up to 30 years this way! Sugar, salt, and honey do not need anything special for long term storage. Just place in a cool, dry location and they are set! Another option to look into for bulk foods is Azure Standard or ordering in bulk from the local grocery store.
